When searching for a work of art, you will rarely find a single book or article about one artwork. So don't get discouraged. Search by larger, broader terms.

- Find articles on the artist himself
- Look at when the work was done. Were other works done at that time comparable?
- Look at what other artists are doing around the same time, or the same country.
- JSTOR Advanced Search
JSTOR is a full-text, searchable archive of academic journals from any subject. JSTOR makes available 15 Language and Literature journals, as well as journals in other relevant academic fields, such as African American Studies, Women's Studies, Anthropology, Film Studies, etc. Volumes of these journals are available starting from the first issues and running up to 3 to 5 years ago.

- BHA and RILA
Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) and the Répertoire de la litterature de l'art (RILA) are citation-only indexes of articles in the fine arts field. The two databases cover material published between 1975 and 2007.

A multidisciplinary database, the contents of Academic Search Premier spans just about any academic subject. The database contains both scholarly and popular resources
- ProQuest Research Library
A database with both popular and scholarly materials that span the academic disciplines. Some materials are full-text within this database, and some are not.
- Credo Reference
A collection of 350 reference books including dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias, books of quotations, as well as subject-specific titles (many with images) including and art and music collection.
