What are statistics?

Simply put, statistics are data that's been collected and classified.  Statistics can support a position or illustrate a point.  When used responsibly, correctly, and effectively, they lend credibility to the author or speaker.

Knowing where to find statistics can be tricky.  They can be found in books, articles, reports, and government publications, in print and in electronic format.  This guide will point you to the best sources for reliable statistics.  Whether and how you use them is up to you.
