Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
The most comprehensive English-language dictionary, the OED provides meanings, history, and pronunciation for words, present and past. It also traces the evolution of word usage through chronologically arranged quotations.
This is a great resource to look for articles arguing for or against a particular issue.
Keep in mind that there are often several synonyms for the same topic – if you don’t find resources under ‘death penalty,’ for instance, you might try searching instead for ‘capital punishment.’
