Embedding a Library Research Guide

Research Guides

Librarians can create a research guide to support students in your course.  The guide can take many forms, but most commonly they are structured as a guide to conducting disciplinary research,  doing library research for a course assignment, or using a specific resource or research tool.  Contact your liaison librarian if you would like to have a guide created for your course.

Embedding Guides into Canvas

It takes less than 5 minutes to add a library research guide to Canvas.  Adding the guide, and directing students to use it, improves the likelihood that students will use use quality academic sources, and gives them someone to contact for further support.

To add the guide to your course in Canvas:

1.  On the left-side menu bar in  click on Settings.

2.  Click the "Apps" tab. 

3.  Click the Redirect app (blue curved arrow).  Don't see the Redirect app option?

4.  Click the “Add App” button.

5.  In "Name," put a name that will make sense to students, e.g., "Research Paper Help"

6.  In URL Redirect, put the guide URL, such as https://guides.sju.edu/philosophy

7.  Check the "Show in Course Navigation" box.  That should be the only box checked.

8.  Click on the red "Add App" button.

Click on Home to return to the course home page.  You will now see the guide added to the course navigation menu, just above the Settings link.  Use the student view to see how it appears for students.

Configuring the Redirect App

Follow these instructions first if the Redirect app was not already listed as an available app.

  1. On the left-side menu bar click on Settings.

  2. Click the "Apps" tab. 

  1. Click “View App Configurations” button.

  2. Click the “+App” button to add an app

  3. Change the dropdown “Configuration Type” to “By URL”

  4. In Config URL, paste the URL - https://www.eduappcenter.com/configurations/n77yl3lftsw87hq7.xml?url=https%3A%2F%2Fguides.sju.edu%2Fcommunication&course_navigation=1

  5. In "Name," type a name that will make sense to students, e.g., "Research Paper Help" or “Library Guide”

  6. Click “Submit”

  7. Click “Yes, Install Tool”

  8. Click on Home to return to the course home page.  You will now see the guide added to the course navigation menu, just above the Settings link. 

  9. If you need to change the url for the research guide, return to Settings / Apps / View App Configurations, find the Library Research Guide app you added, and choose the edit option from the drop down menu.  You can edit the guide url here.
