Create Readings Lists in Canvas

Step-by-step guide for SJU course instructors.

Make Your List Public

If you would like to copy a reading list created by someone else at SJU, they must have opted to make the list public in Discover Reading Lists.  Likewise, if you want others at SJU to be able to to see and use your lists, you must make them public.

How to make a list public:

  1. Navigate to the Canvas course and module where you created the list.
  2. Click "See Current Reading List"


     
  3. Ensure that the list is set to "public


Copy Your Own Reading Lists

If you would like to re-use your own reading list that you created for another course or semester:

  1. Add the tool to the modules section of the Canvas course site where you want the list to appear, following the instructions on page 1 of this guide.
  2. Click to enter the module you just created and you will see a message asking if you would like to copy a reading list.  The options in the drop down list are all reading lists that you have created yourself.  Use the drop down menu to select the reading list you want to copy.


     
  3. Click on "Copy Selected List" and wait for the list to populate.  Then you can organize and modify the list as you like without impacting the original list that you copied. 
  4. Don't forget to publish the list and module in order for students to be able to see it.

Import Other Public Lists

How to import a public list created by someone else:

  1. Add the tool to the modules section of the Canvas course site where you want the list to appear, following the instructions on page 1 of this guide.
  2. Click to enter the module you just created and you will see a message asking if you would like to copy a reading list.   Select "Start Fresh" and click "Continue WITHOUT Copying.


     
  3. Click "See Current Reading List"


     
  4. Choose "Import from Existing List"
  5. Select the list you want from All Public Lists dropdown.  Click "View this LIst" to preview and select individual items or all items from the list.
  6. At the bottom of the preview list, click on "add selected items," then you can organize and modify the list as you like without impacting the original list that you copied. 
  7. Don't forget to publish the list and module in order for students to be able to see it.
