Basic Search Strategies

Use the following strategies to find information most relevant to your research topic.

Search by time period or theme, people, or geographical location

  • Art, African
  • African diaspora in art
  • Makonde (African people)

Use a subject heading searches

  • Masks
  • Art, African West
  • Mascots, African
  • Art, African, Prehistoric
  • Art, African, 20th century
  • African diaspora in Art
  • Art, Black

AND - most databases have this option available in ADVANCED SEARCH 

Use AND to combine terms:

Truncation: easy way to find synonyms of the search term without typing all of the words. Use an asterisk for all of the words that start with those letters. 

  • artist* = artists, artistry, artistic

 

Find Articles

Primo - The Library's Search Engine. Primo provides simple, one-stop searching for books, e-books, articles, videos, newspapers, and more. You can search many of the Library's databases directly from this interface. You can access self service features as well as save searches, create folders, and labels to organize your research. Please note that you will automatically sign into Primo if you have authenticated through another university system (Nest, Gmail, Workday, etc). That said, if you opt to go straight to Primo, then you will need to click on one of the sign in links and authenticate via university systems to access your account.
