Call Numbers

Call numbers tell you where a book is shelved. In the Francis A. Drexel Library, we use Library of Congress Classification which groups titles by subject matter.

Classics is an interdisciplinary field, so there is no one area to browse and find all relevant sources. The following call number ranges will help you get started. Click on the links for more details:

  • PA: Greek and Latin languages and literature
  • DE: The ancient Mediterranean world
  • DF1-DF289: Ancient Greece
  • DG11-DG365: Ancient Rome
  • CC: Archaeology

See also the following call numbers for books on Ancient and Classical fine arts:

  • N5320-5899: Art
  • NA210-340: Architecture
  • NB69-169: Sculpture
  • NC55-69: Drawing
  • ND70-130: Painting
  • NK630-685: Decorative and Applied Arts

Please note that many art books are found on the Oversize book shelves.

Book Search

The Primo search box on the Library's home page is a gateway to thousands of books.

Books (Library Catalog) search in Primo

To find print books (and some ebooks) in the SJU libraries' collections, limit your initial search to Books+ (Library Catalog).

You may also conduct a search, and then limit your results to Resource Type books and then limit again to those "Available at the library". To find ebooks only, limit your search to resource type books and then limit again to those "Available online".
