The purpose of this Copyright Guide is to provide faculty, students, and researchers with guidance about the use of their work and the work of others in the course of teaching, publication, and scholarship.
Copyright Law, while protecting the rights of the copyright holder, also provides a mechanism for others to use these works under certain conditions. There are important exceptions to the law that may apply at an academic institution, including fair use, which permits certain types of uses, including criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship and research as examples of activities that may qualify as fair use. The other major exceptions to the copyright law commonly used by educators are face-to-face instruction and virtual instruction. These exceptions allow for use of works without requesting permission from the copyright holder and potentially paying fees for a license to use.
The University's Copyright Policy applies to all Saint Joseph's faculty, students and researchers.
