Our Kanopy collection includes streaming video access to films, documentaries, TV programs, and educational material from hundreds of content producers. Content covers several subject areas including: documentaries, arts, business, education, global studies and languages, health, media/communications, sciences, and social sciences.
Kanopy videos have links to time stamped transcripts. Users can click on the hyperlinked text of the transcripts to jump to the associated section of the program. Video players can be resized and include closed captioning for accessibility.
Kanopy provides access to content on both PC and Apple devices, but does not support Chrome operating systems. Kanopy recommends, and supports, the use of several internet browsers for those using Mac or Windows operating systems. These include: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer.
If you encounter any error messages while trying to access video content, please refer to the instructions provided by Kanopy on their support page.
For information on watching Kanopy content on mobile and TV apps, please refer to their setup instructions.
If you experience any technical issues or have questions about using this content, please contact Daniel Holden, Serials & Electronic Resources Librarian (email@example.com).
Browsing & Searching
You can browse for content using the categories provided on the Kanopy landing page and by using the search box and browse drop-down menus at the top of the screen.
You do not need to create a personal user account to view content on this platform. However, you will need to register an account by clicking on the "Sign Up" button in the upper right corner of the screen if you would like to save playlists or make clips of longer videos. Be sure to use your SJU e-mail account when registering.
Enabling Transcripts & Creating Citations
To open a time stamped transcript of the video, click on the "...More" button beneath the video player and select the transcript option. Kanopy requires that you begin viewing a video before the transcript will load and enabling this feature.
You will find the option for generating citations from this same menu. Citations will open in a new box beneath the video player. You may need to scroll down the page to see this information. Citation styles provided include APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard.
Making Clips & Sharing Content
You can make clips of longer videos if you are logged into your personal account in Kanopy. There are a few steps to go through to make your clips and get permanent URL links for these to use elsewhere. Please refer to this Kanopy guide for a complete and easy to follow walkthrough.
To share videos with other SJU members, click on the "Share" link beneath the video player and copy the URL that appears. This is the same URL that you will use for linking to content from Canvas.
Adding Content To Canvas
Click on the "Share" button beneath the video player to generate a permanent URL to add a video to Canvas for use in your courses.
To link out to videos on this platform, copy this URL and add it as either a hyperlink to one of your Canvas pages or add it to a Canvas module as an External URL. This link already includes the required information needed to allow off-campus users to access the content.
